Performance Mission & Objectives

To provide Starz players with the opportunity to represent Starz in fun and safe environments at levels suitable to their ability; to ensure all Starz registered players are placed in an appropriate team that will allow them to develop their netball skills and enhance their enjoyment of the game; to enter teams into leagues and regional competitions with the capability of winning matches

Purpose of Policy

This Selection Policy sets out how athletes are selected by Starz into our training sessions and competition squads. This policy applies to athletes being selected into Starz NC. To be eligible for selection into competition squads (Blue, Pink and Regional squads) all players must have EN and Starz membership as well as commit to weekly training sessions and strength & conditioning sessions (if applicable).

Selection Principles

Selection is made by the coaching team using either a trials process or made from observations at training and in matchplay. The selection method used being chosen by the coaching team as appropriate for the competition being selected for, in accordance with the selection criteria.

A player may be removed from the training Programme or any of the Competition Squads in the event of:
* non-compliance in training
* a breach of responsibility
* a violation of the codes of conduct

Selection Criteria

Individuals will be assessed under two areas: Core Netball Competencies and Core Personal Qualities.

Core Netball Competencies
* Technical skill base and performance consistency
* Tactical understanding and decision making
* Fitness and game intensity
* Netball potential
* Effectiveness under pressure
Core Personal Qualities
* Work ethic
* Discipline on and off the court
* Teamwork
* Versatility, consistency and adaptability
The following will also form part of each Starz team selection:
* Positional balance within each team
* Number of fixtures on the annual calendar
* Current form or performance of existing team members
* Nature of the competition the team is being selected for
* State of an individual athlete’s fitness, health and wellbeing. Starz will consider if an Athlete’s performance and/or contribution has been affected by extenuating circumstances such as illness, injury, bereavement, parental leave, work/study commitments or similar which have temporarily compromised their form and/or recent contribution.

Feedback on Outcome of Selection Process

Selection is based on the above and at the discretion of coaches. Please support your child through any decisions on squad selection. If you wish to discuss or have any questions about the selection outcome, please reach out and Starz coaches will set pre-agreed times either before, during or after training sessions to discuss an individual's netball development.
